I like that we have the potential to tell powerful stories: stories that connect us with someone from the past. When we are connected with someone, we can learn about their lives, their struggles, and their resistance to oppression. Knowing those people and their stories gives us something to work from. It can teach us to have empathy for people who are oppressed, which is important. But a good story can also teach how they resisted. Even more importantly it teaches us that they did resist and sometimes they won. It teaches us that change is possible and people have been fighting for it for a very long time. Stories can show us that we are an ongoing piece of a legacy of resistance and hope. That’s a powerful connection and motivation. I love the potential for sharing those stories.
